Tales of Tradition
Before Cameron House was transformed into a luxury resort, it was a family-owned baronial mansion. Its most notable resident was Tobias Smollett, the acclaimed 18th-century novelist whose works are recognised worldwide. He famously professed:
“I have seen the Lago di Garda, Albana, de Visco, Bolsetta and Geneva. Upon my honour, I prefer Loch Lomond to them all. A preference which is certainly owing to the Verdant Islands that seem to float upon its surface.”
Another landmark in the estate’s history was in 1972 when Patrick Telfer Smollett opened the grounds to the public as Loch Lomond Bear Park, and for almost 20 years it was a popular tourist attraction. In 1990, the estate was transformed into a five-star hotel.
