The Ultimate Guide To Loch Lomond Beaches
Our resort is ideal for visiting all the local bays and beaches in and around Loch Lomond. There are many ways to enjoy the beaches scattered around Cameron House, no matter the season, weather or occasion. From swimming, paddling, picnicking, kayaking and more, these beaches are perfect for a day out in the Scottish countryside. So, stock up your bag, don your wetsuit and set off on your Loch Lomond beach adventure.
Inchcailloch Island
This beach is mostly a sandy beach so is great for picnics or swimming and paddling in the famous loch. This beach can get busy during the warmer months, so make sure to arrive early to secure your spot. Please note, although there are composting toilets on the beach, there are no bins so, to keep Loch Lomond beautiful, carry an extra bag for any trash. The island is a nature reserve so it’s important to keep it clean and tidy for the local wildlife.
Inchcailloch Island also has a rich history as one of the oldest and highest islands near Loch Lomond and is associated with Christianity since Saint Kentigerna established a nunnery around 1,300 years ago. There are plenty of good walks through the greenery with bluebells underfoot and the chance to spot a family of deer in the autumn and winter months. At Port Bawn, on the South side of the island, there are benches for picnics and BBQ’s, as well as a small campsite. If you’d like to camp on the island, you will need to book beforehand.
To reach this hidden gem, you’ll have to take a ferry ride from Balmaha Boatyard which takes around five minutes to the island. The drive to the Boatyard is only 25 miles from our resort. Once you arrive, there’s a 25 minute walk through the woodland area to reach the beach but, don’t worry, this walk is lovely with plenty of foliage to admire.
For more information on the Balmaha Ferry, visit their website.
Manse Bay
Just north of Balmaha, you’ll find Manse Bay. Again, this is a mostly sandy beach and is a great spot during summer for swimming in the loch. It’s located a 20 minute walk from Balmaha. There are no facilities available at this beach, so make sure to take any plastic or trash with you when you leave.
Milarrochy Bay
A popular spot in the summer, Milarrochy Bay is perfect for those looking to take to the water and enjoy watersports. Paddling, waterboarding, kayaking, the choice is yours! The bay, located in east Loch Lomond, has become known for its single lone tree set against the backdrop of the loch and its rock formations nestled in the water. For photographers, this landmark is a must-visit for the perfect photo.
There is a caravan and campsite nearby so you can admire the iconic lone tree all year round. Use postcode G63 0AL for a large, free car park. Note however that the car park is locked ‘out of hours’ and a sign with times is located beside the main gate. There is enough space for one or two cars on the grass verge outside the gate. There are toilets on site.
Helensburgh Beach
Just a short 24 minute drive from Cameron House Resort, you will find the stunning Helensburgh beach. Mostly sand and shingle, this beach boasts spectacular views across the water and is perfect for a family day out – you can even admire views of the Rosneath peninsula.
At Helensburgh Beach there are plenty of activities for marine lovers, including windsurfing and boating trips making this beach ideal for those looking for a more active day in the sun.
Lunderston Bay
For those who don’t mind a bit of a drive, Lunderston Beach in Gourock is a good option for a day out by the water. By car, the bay is a 52 minute drive from Cameron House along the A82. At Lunderston Bay, you can enjoy exploring rockpools to find sea creatures, birdwatching and a spot of lunch on the sand.
Not surprisingly, the beach can get busy during the longer months but there’s usually plenty of space for you to set up your blanket and picnic. The facilities at Lunderston are very good with toilets, plenty of bins and good disabled facilities. Also, across the road from the beach is a large garden centre with a coffee shop for your caffeine fix after a day of sunning yourself or playing in the water.
